A quantum leap into the digital age. The STV is modernizing the way it teaches gymnastics movements.
The STV’s existing training catalog has become outdated. As part of a broader modernization initiative, a new web platform was developed to support the future of referee training. SOED was commissioned to create the 3D content and collaborated closely with Ownbit GmbH, the platform’s development partner.
For this project, a dedicated workflow was established to digitize live gymnastics routines using innovative motion capture technology. The captured data was then refined and validated in collaboration with a referee, ensuring accuracy and consistency. At the same time, a neutral visual environment was created -featuring selectable male and female gymnasts – and optimized for seamless online presentation.
Sample scenes from the completed exercise catalog – illustrating some of the key features of the 3D animations.

The filming setup: The gymnasts were filmed simultaneously from eight different angles. This footage was then used to create a 3D model of the gymnastics exercise.
Over a period of seven days, 13 professional gymnasts performed around 800 different exercises on seven different pieces of gymnastics equipment.

To populate the 3D scenes, various pieces of gymnastics equipment were recreated in 3D. These could be flexibly arranged to suit the specific exercise.

In order to focus on the gymnastics exercises, the athletes were not shown in a realistic way. Their outfit feature the colors of the Swiss national team and are designed to be easily modified later, for example to add sponsors’ logos.

As for the surroundings, several different options were considered. Ultimately, the choice fell on a minimalist, realistic setting. The gym has a subtle design featuring light-colored wood and is modeled after contemporary architectural styles. The color scheme of the floor reflects the gymnastics equipment.
